Chen Mancang and Zhang Xiufang, a couple working in the city, leave their daughter Chen Xiaoxue in the care of Mancang's mother, Li Chunhua, in the countryside, where Xiaoxue must also live with her uncle Chen Xingwang's family. Li Chunhua favors boys over girls and treats Xiaoxue cruelly—starving, freezing, beating, and scolding her, blocking her from contacting her parents, and even diverting her living expenses to throw a lavish birthday party for her grandson Chen Xiaoyu. One day Xiaoxue is thrown out of the house, collapses from the cold with a high fever, and Li Chunhua refuses to take her to a doctor, causing her condition to worsen until she dies. Afterward, Li Chunhua and Chen Xingwang try to destroy evidence, frame a neighbor, and bribe the village doctor, but a city doctor fortunately exposes the truth. In the end, a heartbroken Chen Mancang cuts ties with his mother and, together with his wife and endless guilt over their daughter, leaves the place that broke their hearts.
