Indigo Butterfly: The Dye Line Endures uses warm, realistic 3D animation and is set in a blue-and-white batik workshop. Apprentice Lin Che stumbles upon an old butterfly-patterned cloth that has been ruined by a blue dye stain. Under the patient, step-by-step guidance of master craftsman Zhou Yan, Lin Che abandons the shortcut of simply patching it and instead takes fresh white cloth and starts over from the beginning. From controlling the tension of the fabric, sketching the flow of the design in charcoal, outlining the contours in beeswax, and repeatedly dyeing in indigo, to the final trimming and mounting, the entire process unfolds slowly. The dialogue between master and apprentice carries a hidden philosophy of handcraft: inheritance is not about copying something exactly as it was, but about preserving the boundaries and keeping the unique, living spirit of handmade work alive.
