Gu Chuan runs a hardware store in the city. One day he hears that someone plans to convert his family's old house into a community center. The news brings long-buried memories flooding back. Thirty years ago, that old house had been lent to the former principal for use as a school. The year his father passed away, he left Gu Chuan a yellowed IOU stating in black and white that the loan was for three years—yet more than thirty years had passed, and the house was never returned. Over the years, as Gu Chuan made a living away from home, he never once sought out the old principal to demand the house back. Now that the old house is about to be renovated, he decides to return to his hometown and uncover the truth behind that IOU.
