Zhang Guilan, 60, has been alone since her husband passed away early, loneliness her most familiar companion. Her busy children, unable to spare the time to care for her, hire a live-in caregiver named Liu Mei—who sets her sights on the old woman. Outwardly loyal but in truth a gambling addict consumed by greed, Liu Mei cuts off Zhang Guilan's water and food, beats her, and inflicts other abuses, all to seize her money and pay off gambling debts. Frail and kept under strict watch, Zhang Guilan's repeated cries for help are time and again covered up by Liu Mei. Though her children Li Wei and Li Juan sense something wrong with their mother, they are constantly distracted by daily trivialities and repeatedly fooled. In the end, the two notice the clues, gather evidence through surveillance cameras, and after many twists and turns finally expose Liu Mei's cruelty, bringing her and her accomplice to justice.
