Young Shen Zhixia arrives at a Gusu embroidery workshop to study double-sided embroidery under Su Lan. Together they uncover a long-shelved old lotus-pattern embroidery, deciphering the secrets of its stitch paths and color schemes. From splitting silk threads and mixing water-toned gradients to calibrating light and shadow under the eaves by daylight, Shen Zhixia gradually sheds her urge for speed. Teacher and student repeatedly refine the negative space of stitches on both front and back, learning to draw colors from real scenes rather than filling every gap by force. When the lotus-and-water embroidery is finished and framed, Shen Zhixia decides to stay and deepen her craft. Su Lan hands her a fresh blank silk frame, and with a single stitch they begin, carrying on this slow discipline of Jiangnan embroidery.
