The Common Folk's Gambit

In the Great Yan Dynasty, the empire's commercial system has been an iron curtain for a hundred years, forcing the common people to live on their knees. Shen Mo is the sole survivor of a massacre that wiped out his family—the only one who didn't quite die. He has hidden his name and boiled tea for five years, waiting not for customers, but for the right moment. A tattered ledger, a down-and-out escort caravan, an incognito imperial censor, and a female spy from Northern Li—everyone who walks through his door becomes a piece on his chessboard. He doesn't rebel; he dismantles the commercial system. Salt, silk, tea, and promissory notes—he pulls out the pillars of the old order one by one. From Yuping Town to the capital, from the poorest commoners to the powerful minister Pei Shi'an, he uses commerce, intelligence, and timing to carve a path through a seemingly unsolvable game—a path that lets the poor live standing up. The Common Folk's Gambit: once the piece is placed, no regrets.
