His Foolish Wife Is a Treasure

Xiaoli is called the "fool" of the village, raised single-handedly by her grandmother. Fearing that no one will care for Xiaoli after she passes, Grandma wants to marry her off—but Xiaoli refuses, because she loves Zhang Zhi. Running out of the house, Xiaoli happens to meet Zhang Zhi. Zhang Zhi, whose poor family has left him unable to find a wife, is pressured by his family to marry into the bride's household; he refuses, then meets Xiaoli and marries her for a bag of rice. Zhang Zhi thinks his life will go on like this forever, yet amid the daily grind of firewood, rice, oil, and salt, he finds an unexpected warmth. Xiaoli clumsily cooks for Zhang Zhi, smashing a bowl and cutting her hand; peels an apple until only the core is left; brings an umbrella to Zhang Zhi in the fields during the rain and nearly gets assaulted; and while pregnant, climbs over a wall to bring Zhang Zhi money. Zhang Zhi is moved by these "little things," and the two eventually have a son and begin a happy life.
